Why Puppies Need Boundaries!

A well-behaved dog is every new puppy owner’s dream. Puppy antics are cute for a while, but if left without the proper puppy training and leadership, can transform into difficult to manage adult dog behaviors.

Social media is full of funny puppy and dog videos showing them getting into all sorts of mayhem! And while they are fun to stop and look at while you’re scrolling your newsfeed, the same can’t be said when it’s your puppy causing chaos at home! The reality is, those antics you think are silly and cute right now because your puppy is tiny, will continue, and become problematic as your puppy grows.

Puppy training helps you to establish a line of communication between you and your puppy because it gives you the tools to ask your puppy to perform the correct behavior and teach your puppy how to correctly respond. It also helps place you in the role of leader as your puppy will begin to look at you for guidance.

But puppy training goes beyond the basic obedience commands. It molds overall good behaviors, a sense of confidence and security in your puppy, and much-needed routines that puppies need to thrive. One of the greatest ways to accelerate your pup’s good behaviors and obedience is by setting boundaries for them. By implementing boundaries, you are providing the structure your pup needs to learn what is expected of them in the home and in the outside world. Even if your puppy has already started puppy obedience training, is on the way to being completely housebroken, their chewing is under control, and so on, they’re just a puppy, so keeping up with boundaries is essential!

Why Set Boundaries for Your Puppy?

Think of boundaries like the rules of conduct for your home and in public. For example, ask yourself: is your puppy allowed in every room or are there some you don’t want them in? Do you want your pup on the furniture with you or prefer them to relax in a spot of their own? And how about when you take them outdoors or in social settings. Do you want them to walk beside you and follow your lead? Do you wish them to remain calm while greeting new people and in new environments? Only you can define what it is that you really expect from your puppy and only then, start to implement boundaries in order to achieve those goals and stick to them!

Setting boundaries for your puppy might sound like you’re blocking them off from certain things, however, what it really means is teaching your puppy what they can do and where. And once your puppy learns their boundaries, you’ve instilled in them life-long good manners, plus given them the advantage of living a life with far more freedom!

Behaving at Home

@bertieandrorythepups

@bertieandrorythepups

Part of setting boundaries for your puppy at home involves teaching your puppy where they can and can’t go using a playpen, baby gates, or your puppy’s crate. Crates can be used throughout your pup’s entire life as a safe spot for them to retreat when they need space and to rest. But another huge advantage is how much a crate can help speed up the potty training process!

While you’re potty training your puppy, creating these no-puppy zones with crates, playpens or baby gates to limit access to rooms can help you mitigate the chance of your puppy having accidents all throughout the house without your knowledge. Having a secure area for your puppy to play, rest, and eat in when you can’t fully supervise them will help keep them safe and from getting into trouble by exploring areas they shouldn’t be in!

Of course, living with baby gates and playpens forever isn’t ideal. But having these essential tools consistently set up while your puppy is growing up will help them learn what is their space and what is expected of them. When the time comes and your puppy is mature enough that you need to leave them at home alone, you will have far more confidence that your pup won’t get into something that they shouldn’t while you are away!

Attending Social Events

@cafearthurlaval

@cafearthurlaval

If you always envisioned your puppy accompanying you out, setting boundaries extends into situations like going out to restaurants that allow dogs, dog-friendly stores, or family and friends’ homes!

With puppy obedience training, you will learn to use commands such as Sit, Stay, Down, Leave-it, and Heel throughout your puppy’s life and practice them in different settings so your puppy learns to listen to them outside of just at home. The goal of getting your puppy to listen to their commands in those situations is to provide them with impulse control to avoid them excitingly jumping up on people, rushing in or out of doors, barking at other dogs, roaming around freely, and other troublesome behaviors. A puppy that learns good manners, is far more welcome and pleasant to be around in any situation, plus lets you feel more relaxed and confident that your puppy will listen to you!

Our favorite command here at The Puppy Academy to use in social settings is Place command! “Place” essentially teaches your pup to relax in a spot until you release them. “Place” is used for an object that has a natural boundary like a pet cot or dog bed at home, but it can also be used when you’re outdoors or at a social gathering with a blanket or towel, or even a picnic table bench! This can be super helpful for getting your puppy to settle and be calm on command within their boundary, even with lots of people and distractions around them.

Exploring the Outdoors

@adventureswithsummit

@adventureswithsummit

Similar to attending different social situations, you might want to give your puppy the freedom to explore nature during walks or even on long hikes. The off-leash world definitely lets your puppy run, roam, and explore to their heart's content but poses its own set of risks. Think of going off-leash as there being no boundary! And pups without a strong Recall can get lost if they chase after something, run into a road, or spark an altercation with another dog, regardless of how friendly your pup may be.

For your pup’s utmost safety, a leash and strong Recall are two of the best tools you can have that will help reinforce outdoor boundaries! In instances when you are hiking or in more rural areas, using a long-lead in place of their shorter walking leash can give your pup more room to explore safely, and teach them the distance boundary they have between you and the end of the long-line before you Recall them back to you.

Meeting New People & Dogs

Screen Shot 2020-09-17 at 2.37.27 PM.png

Reactions toward new people coming over the house such as running and jumping all over them, and non-stop barking before they can get a foot in the house is not a pleasant experience for anyone! Earlier we touched on impulse control for their energy by performing a task such as Sit and Stay or example, to mitigate their excited outbursts! In this section, proper socialization is the other piece to set up a boundary for your pup’s behaviors. Giving your puppy exposure to new experiences can help your puppy positively associate with them for the rest of their life.

Introductions to new people and dogs after your puppy has received the necessary round of vaccinations will help teach them A. that meeting new people and dogs can be fun, and B. that there’s a correct way to do it, without getting overly excited! Get into the habit of having your puppy be calm in a Sit or Down command before allowing others to say hi or pet your pup. Remember, you get what you pet! If your pup is being greeted and pet by someone while in a super-excited state, they’re essentially being rewarded for their excitement and will be encouraged to act that way again the next time. By routinely practicing the calm Sit or Down boundary before interactions, you are creating a habitual good behavior whenever your puppy encounters new things in the future!

How Can You Set Boundaries for Your Puppy Now?

Start with spending some time deciding what boundaries are important to you and for the life you want with your pup, and get the whole family on the same page! Finding a reputable puppy trainer and puppy training classes either in your area or an online puppy class can help you with establishing and enforcing these boundaries. A good puppy trainer will instruct you on how to teach and use the basic commands, impulse control techniques, teach you how to socialize your puppy, and so on! Next, invest in the right tools to help you with your puppy’s training. A crate, playpen, harness, and leash are all necessary to help you create boundaries and lead your puppy at home and in public. Finally, remain consistent with your puppy’s training! Setting up boundaries is only effective if they become a routine in your puppy’s life. Not letting them on the couch one day, then letting them up the next will only serve to confuse them and let them think it’s okay not to listen to you every now and again. Doing these simple but effective things now will help you not only set up boundaries for your puppy but set up a foundation for your puppy to grow into a well-behaved dog!

Puppy Feeding Guide for New Owners!

Puppies need a well-balanced diet in order to grow up healthy and strong. In the next few minutes, learn the essentials of what, when, and how to feed your puppy with this helpful guide!

If you’re reading this blog, you’ve recently brought home a new puppy! Puppy food is essential for the first year of your pup’s development and sets the foundation for their overall health and nutrition for the rest of their life. But visit any pet store chain and you’re bound to encounter a wide array of puppy food brands and types. Not to mention, puppy feeding tips based on your pup’s size and breed. The process can be overwhelming for any new puppy owner. The good news is, with the amount of selection of puppy food out there, with some dedicated research and consulting your veterinarian, you’ll find a puppy food that meets the needs of your growing puppy and your budget.

So where do you begin?

The best place to start when thinking about puppy feeding is with the questions you’re probably already thinking about! “What should I feed my puppy?”, “How often should I feed my puppy?”, “When do I switch from puppy food to adult dog food?”, and so on. We’ll break down each of these questions, plus dive into a puppy feeding schedule based on your puppy’s growth phase and important feeding facts and tips to keep in mind!

What should I feed my puppy?

First, consider your puppy’s breed(s) and size. Toy, small, and large breed puppies have different growth and nutritional needs. Puppies that are considered toy and small, can reach their full adult size at about nine to ten months of age. Whereas a large breed puppy can take longer anywhere from fifteen to twenty-four months.

Consult your puppy’s veterinarian to understand what type of nutrients your puppy needs. Certain breeds have a predisposition for certain health-related issues that appropriate nutrients can help avoid or manage. This will be an important factor in determining what kind of food to feed your puppy!

Additionally, puppy food comes in a variety of “types” such as dry kibble, semi-moist, wet canned, freeze-dried, raw, freshly made, and even customizable recipes tailored specifically for your pup and their needs. With so many wonderful and healthy food options for pups on the market these days, it’s definitely worth taking some time to learn about each of these choices,  and consult with your puppy’s veterinarian about the puppy food you’re looking into and the benefits they can have for your pup!

No matter what option you go with, always remember to read the full ingredient label on anything your puppy is going to be ingesting to determine if it’s something you’re ok with them eating and is healthy for them. Just like with our own humans’ food and snacks, not everything that’s added to them is always good for us, so it’s always good to be aware!

How often should I feed my puppy?

@cosmoandjess

Your puppy’s feeding schedule will update rapidly throughout the first year! We’ve broken down feeding based on the various growth phases your puppy will undergo.

Generally, at around six weeks of age, puppies will start to wean off their mothers, and onto a specially formulated puppy food. In the beginning, your puppy’s feeding schedule will be determined based on their fast development. Your puppy will require more frequent, smaller feedings throughout the day. When planning your puppy’s feeding schedule, start out with three to four smaller portioned feedings from the time you bring your puppy home, up until they are twelve weeks of age. If you need help understanding how to plan your puppy’s feeding schedule, check out our Create a Daily Schedule for Your Puppy blog!

At three months of age, if your puppy was eating four times each day, you can usually now adjust it to three meals and remain with that schedule until they are around six months of age or depending on their size and breed. During this stage, your puppy will start to lose its puppy pudge or potbelly, and begin to develop their mature features! If you are concerned that your puppy appears underweight or overweight, speak with your veterinarian for advice on adjusting your puppy’s feeding schedule!

From six months of age to a year, you can transition your puppy’s feeding times down to two a day! Your pup may even indicate to you that they’re ready for this if you notice them not being as interested in eating at certain times of the day that they used to. Additionally, this is also the time in which many owners opt to have their puppies either neutered or spayed which can decrease a pup’s need for high caloric and energy needs. You may consider starting to make the switch to adult dog food!

When do I switch my puppy to adult dog food?

puppies eating.png

Around the time your puppy switches to two meals a day, you may also consider starting to make the switch to adult dog food! This timing can depend on their breed, the diet they are on, and maturing rates, in order to ensure they are having all their nutritional needs met. If in doubt, speak to your vet about the appropriate timing for your puppy. Anytime you do decide to change your pup’s food, don’t immediately do it at once as this could upset their tummy and entire digestive system! Make the transition a slow process over several days by mixing the new food with their current puppy food, as you gradually reduce the puppy food and increase the new adult dog food!

To recap this puppy feeding schedule, here’s a simple sample timeline and feeding instructions you can follow:

6 weeks to 12 weeks:

Feed your puppy 3-4 times a day in small portions.

3 months to 6 months:

Cut down 1 feeding, if they are eating 4 times a day. Continue to feed your puppy 3 times a day in small portions.

6 months to 12 months:

Cut down 1 feeding and continue to feed your puppy 2 times a day. At this point, you can begin weaning your puppy off of puppy food and onto their adult diet.

1 year old:

Your pup should be fully transitioned to eating 2 times a day and on their adult food diet. Continue this moving forward!

We definitely encourage you to speak with your veterinarian when you bring home your new puppy to determine the puppy feeding schedule that works for your puppy!

When it comes to puppy feeding, there’s more involved than just knowing what and how much to feed your puppy! Here are a few items to remember when it comes to puppy feeding!

  1. While a puppy is still growing into the habit of eating their food at a specific time, you might be inclined to just leave food out all the time. This could inadvertently create a picky eater and grazer. Not to mention, it can make the potty training process much more difficult and unpredictable! Discourage your puppy from developing those habits by setting their food out at the specific time, leave it out for 15-20 minutes, and then remove their bowl. Repeat this each time you feed your puppy until they realize that their opportunity to eat is during those specific feeding times!

  2. Before you buy vitamins or supplements, make sure that you speak with your veterinarian about giving any of these to your puppy. Excess of anything could do more harm than good especially if your puppy is already receiving a balanced diet!

  3. Don’t make major dietary changes without consulting your veterinarian first. Drastic changes may cause digestive problems and might not have the correct nutrients that your puppy needs to develop.

  4. Avoid adding different toppers or new ingredients to your pup’s food to entice them to eat it! This can further create a picky eater where you’re constantly having to change what they’re eating to pique their interest, or they’ll start to pick out only what they want from their bowl and just eat that! Plus the frequent change can upset a puppy's sensitive stomach.

We are what we eat, and that goes for puppies, too! Their food will help fuel and build their growing bodies so making sure that you pick the right type of food and provide them enough of it will support their development into adulthood! Taking time to do research and really consult your veterinarian are the two key steps in navigating puppy feeding. Monitoring your puppy’s growth and weight gain will also help you notice if your puppy is on the right track.
